The Academic All-District teams are voted on by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and those on the first team will go on to represent the district on the national ballot. In order to be nominated for Academic All-District and All-America honors, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve, must have a 3.20 cumulative grade-point average and must have completed at least one full academic year at his institution.
District VI encompasses universities from the states of Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico.
In 2005 Szumanski received the same honor as a sophomore before going on to claim Academic All-American status the same year. Nearly a 4.0 student-athlete, Szumanski's performance on the court is as notable in the classroom as he was also recently named Academic All-Big 12 for the second time.
Sitting out last season with an ankle injury, Szumanski picked up right where he left off having one of the most successful junior campaigns as a Red Raider. With a win over Pennsylvania's Jason Pinsky, he advanced to the second round of the NCAA Individual Championships for the first time in program history.
The Opole, Poland native has put himself in Tech's record book in six categories, including holding the number one spot in career singles victories with 69 and career doubles victories with 42.
