Texas Tech's Kipyego Captures NCAA Mountain Regional Crown

Texas Tech's Sally Kipyego captured first place in today's NCAA Mountain Regionals held at Weber State on the Schneiter's Riverside Golf Course.
In order to be eligible to participate at the national championships, teams and individuals must qualify in their respective NCAA regions. The top two, seven-person team will automatically be qualified from each of the nine regions, for a total of 18 teams. And the first four athletes from each region who are not a part of a qualifying team and two additional qualifiers, are selected to participate in each championship and all individual qualifiers must finish in the top 25 in their region in order to advance.
The Kenyan native finished in first place with a 6K time of 19:29.4. Kipyego out-ran 117 other runners, placing 14.5 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher, Jenny Barringer from Colorado. Teammate Irene Kimaiyo followed in fourth place clocking a time of 20:57.2. Both Tech runners improved their 2006 regional times of 19:45.9 and 21:14, respectively. The third Red Raider to finish was Gladys Kipsang with a time of 21:10.7. The women's team placed fifth out of the other 16 regional teams, with 113 team points.
The Tech men finished in 11th place with 287 points, with the help from Edwin Sang, who led the men's team with his 23rd-place finish with a time of 31:12.4. The next set of Red Raiders to finish was Silas Kemboi and Gilbert Limo in 40th and 60th place. The men's squad did not advance to the NCAA Championships.
The next contest for the Red Raiders is the NCAA Championships held in Terre Haute, Ind.
