LUBBOCK, Texas - Behind a sizzling final-round 274 Tuesday, Texas Tech capped off its fall season with its third team title of the season after finishing at 21-under 831 at the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate in Las Cruces, N.M. Tuesday's victory marks the first time in school history that the Red Raiders have ever won three events in a season.
"We definitely set this as a goal," Tech coach Greg Sands said. "I'm really proud of our effort."
Freshman Sergio Franky claimed the first individual medal of his career with an 11-under 202. Franky's showing tied the lowest score ever in the 17 years of the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate and marked the first time since 1999 that a Tech freshman has won an event.
UT-Arlington came in second place in the team standings with a 17-under 835, while Nevada and Kansas State tied for third place at eight-under 844. Ball State rounded out the top five, while Loyola Marymount, Louisiana Monroe, New Mexico State, Miami (Ohio), Cal Poly, South Alabama, Washington State, Northern Colorado, Rice, UTEP, Nebraska and Towson finished off the standings in that order.
The Red Raiders entered the day with a 557 and held a three-stroke lead over UT-Arlington. Tech finished the final 18 holes strong as Franky fired a 65 and Santiago Rivas shot a 69 to help the Red Raiders secure the victory.
"I was really impressed by the way the guys played today," Sands said. "They got the ball up and down the course well and played tough."
Tech was paced by three golfers in the top five. Franky took home first-place, while Garrett Merrell, six-under 207, finished in fourth and Rivas, five-under 208, tied for fifth. Sophomore Will Griffin carded a one-over 214 and Nils Floren finished at 13-over 227 to round out the Red Raiders' scoring.
Tech will have the next three months off before teeing off its spring season at the UH-Hilo Intercollegiate in Waikoloa, Hawai'i on Feb. 7-9.
