Griffin Leading After First Round at Oklahoma Intercollegiate

LUBBOCK, Texas - Will Griffin (San Antonio, Texas) fired an opening-round 69 to claim the lead at the Oklahoma Intercollegiate on Sunday. The nation's No. 13-ranked golfer and current Big 12 Conference golfer of the month will take a two-shot lead into Monday's second round at Oak Tree Golf Club in Edmond, Okla.
Griffin opened the day with back-to-back pars, before carding a bogey on the par-5 third. With an even score going into nine, Griffin birdied the 480-yard ninth to go under at the turn. After his second bogey of the day at 10, Griffin tallied birdies at 12 and 15 to finish 2-under. He leads Texas A&M's Robert Gates, Jr., by two strokes and was the only golfer of the day below par.
Griffin's efforts helped the Red Raiders to a second-place spot on the leaderboard Sunday, three strokes behind fellow Big 12 Conference member Texas A&M. Texas Tech, which entered the tournament ranked No. 11 nationally, was 15-over on the day with a 299, six shots better than third-place and No. 34 Arkansas. The 17th-ranked Aggies posted a 12-over 296.
Garrett Merrell (Highland Park, Texas) and Santiago Rivas (Cali, Colombia) are among the top 10, finishing in fifth-place and eighth-place ties, respectively. Merrell shot a 4-over 75, while Rivas carded one shot lower with a 5-over 76. Matt Smith (Canberra, Australia) is in a 27th-place tie with a 79 and Sergio Franky (Bogota, Colombia) is tied in 35th place with an 80.
Trailing the Aggies, Red Raiders and Razorbacks, No. 54 Baylor (+22, 306) and SMU (+23, 307) are fourth and fifth. Tournament-host and No. 24 Oklahoma (+27, 311) is sixth and followed by Oral Roberts (+33, 317), Santa Clara (+33, 317), Tulsa (+37, 321), Texas-San Antonio (+38, 322) and Stephen F. Austin (+45, 329).
The 11-team field resumes play Monday morning and will complete the event with the third and final round Tuesday. Live scoring is available throughout the event at www.golfstat.com.
