
Tech Gets a Look at Top Teams in the Nation

LUBBOCK, Texas - After a fourth-place finish at the International Collegiate in St. Andrews, Scotland, the No. 24 Texas Tech men's golf squad will face a challenging 18-team field at the Carpet Capital Collegiate Classic. The Red Raiders will travel to Rocky Face, Ga., for the 17th edition of the event hosted by Georgia Tech. The tournament will play out over the course of three days, with one round per day. THE COURSE
The Farm Golf Club in Rocky Face, Ga., will host the Carpet Capital event. The 7,010 yard, par 72 course has been home to the Carpet Capital Collegiate Classic for each of its 18 playings. The most recent notable tournament to play out at The Farm was the 2005 U.S. Senior Amateur Championship. For more information on the course and the tournament, you may visit www.thefarmgolfclub.org.
Carpet Capital records on The Farm for team scoring include an 18-hole low of 275 and a 54-hole low of 850. Individual records for 18- and 54-holes are 64 and 203, respectively. Georgia Tech has championed the event on six occasions, with Clemson having won the title four times.
CARPET CAPITAL FIELD
A challenge awaits the Texas Tech team on the course at the Carpet Capital Collegiate Classic in the form of 17 other schools. Five of the teams competing come in with a top-10 preseason rank by GolfWorld. Georgia steps in as the team to beat with a number three ranking. No. 4 Clemson, No. 5 Georgia Tech, No. 6 Florida and No. 8 Wake Forest round out the top 10 squads.
Alabama (15), Duke (22), East Tennessee State (16), Georgia State (25) and Texas Tech (24) are all ranked in GolfWorld's top 25. Finishing out the field are Auburn, Augusta State, North Carolina State, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, TCU, and Vanderbilt. All teams are ranked 38th or better, minus Vanderbilt.
The only team that Texas Tech has matched up against in the previous tournament was No. 8 Wake Forest. The Demon Deacons finished second at the International Collegiate with a 7-under 857, four shots lower than Tech. Wake's top finisher tied with Red Raider Jake Younan-Wise for third with a 54-hole score of 210.
THE LAST TEE
Tech's last tee was overseas at the Torrance Course at St. Andrews Bay for the International Collegiate. Tech finished the first day in fourth place and remained steady to finish in fourth, three shots shy of third place. The Red Raiders finished the tournament with rounds of 292-285-284--861 (-3).
Two Tech members finished with top-10 standings, with Jake Younan-Wise leading the way after firing a 6-under 210. He finished in a five-way tie for third to earn his first top-five finish. Senior Oscar Floren finished in 10th place to capture his 17th top-10 performance. Floren turned in rounds of 70-69-72--211 (-5).
Garrett Marrell returned to Lubbock after marking his top-career finish, 24th, with scores of 75-72-72--219. Freshman Will Griffin hit a 6-over 222 to place 30th. Brandon Lakatta carded a 229 to finish 52nd. Jeremy Martin competed as an individual and finished in 27th place with a 4-over 220.
