LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech men's tennis will host the Van Hubbard $50,000 Lubbock Challenger presented by Virginia Buck for the second year. The qualifying matches are set to begin on Sat., Sept. 16, and will go through Sun., Sept. 17, and will be held at the McLeod Tennis Center.
On Mon., Sept. 18, the main draw will begin with all matches starting at noon and running until approximately 10 p.m. each day. This year's field of participants includes Sam Querrey, Robert Kendrick, and last year's finalist Bobby Reynolds. Querrey reached the second round of the 2006 U.S. Open this year, losing in four sets to Gaston Gaudio. Kendrick participated at Wimbledon this year and took 2nd-ranked Rafael Nadal to five sets.
The tournament will showcase 32 of the top 200 players in the world, including 10 players who competed in last week's U.S. Open in New York. Tech junior Bojan Szumanski will be receiving a wild card into the draw, with three additional Red Raiders playing in the qualifying matches on Saturday.
"We're very excited to bring the Challenger back to Lubbock," said Tech Head Coach Tim Siegel. "This is a great opportunity for the community to see some of the best tennis players in the world right here in Lubbock."
There will be a free kid's clinic from 2:30-4 p.m on Sun., Sept. 17. An adult pro-am will follow from 4-6 p.m. Those interested in participating in the pro-am, or for questions regarding ticket prices, box seats, or any other information, please contact Amanda Knight at (806) 787-0844.
