WILTON, Conn. - The Texas Tech men's golf team has been ranked 24th in Golf World's College Preview coaches poll, as announced by the publication on Thursday. Senior Red Raider Oscar Floren has also been listed on the "Top 50 Male Players to Watch," ranking ninth.
Oklahoma State swept the top honors in the college preview, earning the first-place position ahead of UCLA. Pablo Martin of Oklahoma State topped the male players list, with Cowboy Jonathan Moore second.
Besides Texas Tech and Oklahoma State, the only other conference school in the rankings is Texas A&M (7). Texas and Baylor received votes.
The rankings come on the heels of one of Tech's best seasons in school history. The team was selected for the 2006 NCAA Championships with a seventh seed, the first selection since 2002 and the highest seeding for a Tech squad. In the NCAA East Regional, the team finished with their highest placing ever with a third-place showing.
Floren is coming into his senior year after leading the team with a 71.5 stroke average. He earned the school's first individual title since 2003 when he won the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship, and finishing in the top five in six of 13 competitions. For his efforts in 2005-06, Floren was selected as a PING All-America First Team honoree, the first to be named to the first team for Texas Tech.
The first test for the Red Raiders for the 2006-07 season is the International Collegiate, which will take place this Saturday and Sunday in St. Andrews, Scotland.
