LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech junior golfer Oscar Floren (Ljungskile, Sweden) will square off against the world's best golfers on Thursday as he begins play at the 2005 British Open at The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews.
In Thursday's first round, Floren will tee off in the 23rd group, which includes professional golfers Richard Moir and Peter Oakley and is slated for a 10:37 a.m. local tee time (4:37a.m. CST). On Friday, Floren will be back in action as his second round is slated to begin at 3:48 p.m. local time (9:48 a.m. CST)
To qualify for the event, Floren fired a 65 in the final round of the British Open local qualifier at Lundin Golf Club in Fife, Scotland, Sunday en route to a top-three finish and a spot among this week's field of 156 at The Open.
Floren, who opened the two-round qualifier with a 68, tied with current PGA tour player Brad Faxon in second place with a two-round total of 133. Lars Brovold of Norway shot 66-64 to win the qualifier as the top three players from each of four qualifying events advanced. Tech senior Nicolas Allain (Deaurible, France) also competed in the Lundin qualifier, shooting 74-74.
Playing as an amateur in the event, Floren is the first Texas Tech golfer to play in the British Open while a member of a Red Raider squad. Former Tech golfer and head coach Jeff Mitchell played in The Open during his professional career.
Floren paced the Red Raiders during his sophomore year in 2004-05 with a 74.3 stroke average. His best finish on the season was a third-place tie at The Tucker in Albuquerque, N.M., a week after a seventh-place finish to open the campaign at the Notre Dame Invitational. Floren posted three top 10 finishes last season and five top 20 showings.
