LUBBOCK, Texas - Former Red Raider golfer Kyle Willmann was standing at even par through nine, but bogeyed five holes on the back to finish with an opening-round 75 at the 105th U.S. Open at Pinehurst Resort & Country Club on Thursday.
Willmann, a native of Edmond, Okla., and a 2003 Tech graduate, posted a bogey and par on the front, before struggling with the putter on the back nine. He is currently tied in 76th place with 18 other golfers, including Kenny Perry, winner of the Bay Hill Invitational and Bank of America Colonial events this year, and 2003 Masters Champion Mike Weir.
Olin Brown and Rocco Mediate each shot three-under par and lead the 156-player field. Second-round action begins Friday morning. For up-to-the-minute scores, log-on to www.usopen.com/scores/index.html.
