LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech men's tennis senior Michael Innerebner was named to the first team of the 2004-05 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® Men's At-Large University Division selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), while sophomore Bojan Szumanski was selected to the third team.
Innerebner is the first men's tennis student-athlete to be named to the first team, and he and Szumanski are just the second and third men's tennis student-athletes to be chosen Academic All-America. Former Tech player Charles Bailey was third team in 1991 and 1992.
The men's at-large teams consist of student-athletes nominated from the following sports: fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis, volleyball, water polo and wrestling. Innerebner was the only tennis student-athlete chosen to the first team, while he and Szumanski were two of nine tennis student-athletes named to all three teams and the only tennis players from the Big 12 Conference.
Innerebner, a native of Bolzano, Italy, boosts a 3.934 grade-point average (GPA) in finance, while the Szumanski, who hails from Opole, Poland, has a 4.000 GPA in personal financial planning. Grade-point averages submitted were through the fall of 2004.
To be on the ballot for Academic All-America, a student-athlete must have been selected Academic All-District in his respective district (there are eight districts across the United States). Innerebner and Szumanski were representing District VI. In order to be nominated for Academic All-District and All-America honors, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve, must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade-point average and must have completed at least one full academic year at his institution.
On the court, Innerebner finished the year with a 27-8 record in singles and 13-15 in doubles. His 27 wins in singles ranks first on the Tech single-season list for victories. Szumanski was 26-9 in singles play and was 17-11 in doubles action. His 26 victories are tied for second on Tech's single-season list for victories.
Both student-athletes helped lead the Red Raiders to their first appearance in the round of 16 at the NCAA Championship this year and a school-best record of 25-4.
