Red Raiders End Season at Central Regional

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech men's golf team wrapped up the 2004-05 season with a 21st-place finish at the 2005 Men's Golf Central Regional in South Bend, Ind. The Red Raiders (287-306-290-883) were led by junior Andrew Dresser who finished tied for 25th for the event.
The Red Raiders, who had to finish in the top 10 to advance to their second NCAA Championship, were unable to overcome a tough second-round performance to move into the top spots. Tech finished eight-strokes out of qualifying contention.
Junior Dresser, who missed qualifying in 2002 for the NCAA Championships as an individual, finished seven-strokes out of the top-two individual qualifying spots in 2005. The two individuals that qualified from the Central Region were Eastern Michigan's individual participant Korey Mahoney (71-68-69-208) and Wichita State's Judd Easterling (74-66-69-209).
Qualifying for the NCAA Championships in Baltimore, Md., was No. 5 Augusta State (284-284-281) leading the field in first with a three-round score of 849. Augusta State, who was able to pass No. 1 Oklahoma State (282-283-293-858) that finished second, won the title by eight strokes. Closing out the qualifying field was No. 40 Texas A&M (290-291-282-863), No. 29 Tulsa (287-294-285-866) and No. 10 Kentucky (288-292-286-866) finishing in the three through five spots. Rounding out the top-10 was No. 46 Arkansas (295-297-278-870), No. 58 Missouri (285-293-292-870), No. 22 SMU (288-299-286-873), No. 17 Texas (290-290-294-874) and No. 27 Purdue (291-288-296-875).
Purdue had to overcome a playoff round against Wichita State who finished the third-round in a tie with the Boilermakers at 875. Purdue was able to settle the contest in the first hole of the playoff to advance to the Championships.
Finishing the course for the Red Raiders, in order of best Tech finish, was sophomore Oscar Floren who finished tied for 36th behind a third-round 73. Floren (71-74-73-218), Tech's second-best golfer for the event, finished in front of junior Nicolas Allain (79-75-70-224) who carded a tied for 77th-place finish. Rounding out Tech's competitors was Tyler Symons (72-82-77-231) tied for 116th followed by senior Shaun Melville (74-83-76-233) tie for 120th.
Winning the overall individual title was Augusta State's Kalle Edberg (70-68-67) carding a three-round score of 205. Edberg was followed by Oklahoma State's Pablo Martin (65-70-71) who finished just one stroke back of Edberg shooting a 206 for the event.
The Red Raiders finish the season with 10 top-10 finishes, with their best performance coming at the Aggie Invitational where the Red and Black finished in third out of 14 teams.
Tech's best individual finish came at the clubs of Floren who finished tied for third at The Tucker Invitational. Floren finished The Tucker with his season-lowest three round score of 209, and his season-lowest single round of a 66.
Overall the Red Raiders finish up a great season under fifth-year head coach Greg Sands. The Raiders will be losing one member from this year's squad in Melville who joined Tech last year as a transfer student from Oklahoma Christian University. Tech will return four starting golfers from this year's squad, and have scheduled two newcomers for the 2005-06 team.
