LUBBOCK, Texas - Former Texas Tech golfer Kyle Willmann, competing in his first PGA Tour event, shot a 3-over 75 in the opening round of the Shell Houston Open at Redstone Golf Club on Thursday. The Edmond, Okla., native qualified for the event Monday.
Willmann opened the event with two pars, before suffering the first of four bogey-plus holes on the day. A birdie on the sixth hole allowed him to complete the front nine at par. He was three over on the back, including a birdie on the 15th and a double-bogey on the 18th hole. Willmann is currently tied in 136th place entering Friday's second round.
Willmann transferred to Texas Tech from Tyler Junior College in 2000 and made his presence immediately felt. His Tech career was highlighted at the 2002 NCAA West Regional in Albuquerque, N.M., when he sank a 25-foot putt on the final playoff hole to send the Red Raiders their first NCAA Championships in 26 years.
