LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech senior QB Cody Hodges (Hereford, Texas) was selected as one of 12 semifinalists for the Maxwell Award, announced Tuesday by Maxwell Football Club president Ron Jaworski. The Maxwell Award is presented annually to the nation's top collegiate football player.
While directing the nation's top passing attack, Hodges has led the Red Raiders to a 7-1 record and their best start since the 1976 season, when Tech opened 8-1. Hodges is the fifth Tech quarterback to lead the nation in passing. He is averaging 386.8 yards per game and has thrown 25 touchdown passes. Additionally, Hodges ranks fourth nationally with a 68.1 completion percentage.
Earlier this season against Kansas State, Hodges turned in the sixth-best single-game passing performance in NCAA history and second best in school history with 643 yards in Tech's 59-20 win against Kansas State. He also completed five touchdown passes.
Despite playing a backup role during his first four seasons, Hodges was one of 50 players named to the Maxwell Award watch list prior to the start of the season.
Hodges joins Texas' Vince Young as the only two players from the Big 12 Conference on the list. Other notables include Southern California quarterback Matt Leinart and running back Reggie Bush, UCLA running back Maurice Drew and Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn.
Voting for the award will begin on Mon., Nov. 7, and close Fri., Nov. 25.
The announcement of the 2005 Maxwell Award winner will be made during the Home Depot College Football Awards Show that will be broadcast on ESPN on Thurs., Dec. 8. Three finalists for the award will be in attendance for the ESPN broadcast. A formal presentation will be made at the Maxwell Football Club's Awards Dinner on Fri., March 3, 2006, at the Harrah's Entertainment Complex in Atlantic City, N.J.
