
Volleyball Faces Iowa State on Senior Night

Lubbock, Texas - For its last home match of the season, the Red Raider volleyball team will face the Cyclones of Iowa State on Sat., Nov. 19, in the United Spirit Arena. The first serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. The Red Raiders are 11-17, 4-13 Big 12, and will play their final two matches on the road against Texas A&M and Baylor next week.
Fans holding a ticket stub from the 11 a.m. Tech-OU football game will be granted free admission at the United Spirit Arena.
Last time out, Tech fell to the No. 10 Texas Longhorns, 3-0, in Austin, on Nov. 16. UT took the match by game scores of 30-19, 30-20, 30-18.
Philister Sang shouldered the offense with eight kills and chipped in on defense with six digs. Desiree Batista controlled the defense with 12 digs. Brianna Florus ran the middle with one solo block and three block assists. Emily Ziegler served as the primary setter and aided on 16 sets.
The Cyclones snapped a six-match losing streak with a 3-0 win over Oklahoma on Wed., Nov. 16. They have compiled 14-14 and 7-10 records during the season. They are currently sitting at sixth in the conference after finishing in 11th place during the 2004 campaign. Cyclone junior Katie Churn is leading the Big 12 in digs with 4.37 per game.
Tech leads the series with ISU, 19-3. The Cyclones have taken two of ten matches in the Hub City.
At the last meeting between the two teams, The Texas Tech volleyball team was swept by Iowa State, in Ames, Iowa, on Oct. 4, 2005. The Cyclones took the match with game scores of 30-13, 30-19 and 30-17.
Category leaders for the match were Philister Sang with nine kills, Emily Ziegler with nine assists and Desiree Batista with six digs. This match marks the second all-time lowest match hitting percentage for a Tech team as the Red Raiders posted a swing percentage of -.053. Iowa State hit for .461, the third-best hitting percentage posted by an opponent against Tech.
In tonight's pre-match events, seniors Desiree Batista and Brianna Florus will be honored. Both players spent two seasons with Tech and had immediate impact of the Red and Black.
Batista has controlled the Tech defense since she stepped foot in the United Spirit Arena. Since making the transition from outside hitter to libero, Batista has tallied 759 career digs, 76 service aces and 103 kills.
With Batista in the back, Florus ran the net for Tech. In her two seasons she recorded 37 solo blocks and 198 block assists. Still relying on her ability to swing, she put down 241 kills during her time at Tech.
