
Cross Country Names Six to Honor List

Lubbock, Texas - The Texas Tech cross country teams named six of its athletes to the 2005 Academic All-Big 12 honor list, it was announced by the conference today.
For the men's squad, Erica Ayala, a native of Groesbeck, Texas, majoring in Arts and Sciences, and Pedro Vargas, a native of Del Rio, Texas, majoring in Biology, were named to the first team. Benson Cheserek, a native of Nairobi, Kenya, majoring in Exercise and Sport Science, was named to the second team.
On the women's side, Molly Evans, Katie Leonard and Jessica Stovall were awarded with first team honors. Evans is a native of Plano and is majoring in Business. Leonard is a native of Burkburnett and is majoring in Biology and Chemistry. Stovall is a native of Cisco, Texas and is majoring in Exercise and Sport Science and English.
To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of his/her team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
Baylor will host the Big 12 Cross Country Championships on Friday, Oct. 28, at Bear Run Cross Country Course in Waco, Texas. The men's 8,000-meter race will begin at 10 a.m. CT, followed by the women's 6,000-meter run at 11 a.m. The top men's and women's teams will be crowned league champion and earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships with a top finish at the regional meet. The top 15 individuals in each race will be named all-conference.
