Lubbock, TEXAS - The Texas Tech men's golf team received two votes in the 2004-05 Golf World College Coaches Poll Preseason Edition. Team leader, junior Andrew Dresser, received recognition as he was named to the Top 50 Male Players to Watch for 2004-05.
The Red Raiders joined fellow Big 12 teams Oklahoma State (ranked fifth), Texas (ranked eighth), Oklahoma (ranked 22nd), Texas A&M (30 votes), Colorado (21 votes) and Kansas (18 votes) on the preseason Golf World Poll.
Head Coach Greg Sands is grateful that his squad is receiving recognition, but knows that now its time to prove that they belong on the list.
"It's neat to see that someone else is recognizing the talent that we have put together here at Tech," said Sands. "But it's one thing to be voted for and it's another to prove that we can do it. Hopefully we can prove to those who voted for us that we belong on the list."
Tech's Dresser is coming off another stellar season to lead the Red Raiders in back-to-back years as the scoring leader with a stroke-average of 72.31, one stroke better than his freshman mark. Dresser competed in all 12 tournaments as a sophomore; opening the season with two top five finishes. He helped lead the Red Raiders to a third-straight NCAA Regional appearance where they finished 13th. Dresser Currently ranks first with a 72.31 and 71.85 on Tech's top 10 single-season and career stroke-averages, respectively. Dresser not only excels on the greens but in the classroom. Dresser was named to the Academic All-Big 12 first team as well as to the Big 12's All-Conference team. Dresser ended the season with six top ten finishes, four of those in the top five.
The Red Raiders wrapped up one of their greatest seasons in school history, tying the highest finish in the Big 12 of fifth, while also finishing in the top five in six tournaments. Tech finished the 2003-04 season ranked 43rd in the nation, while advancing to the NCAA Central Regional for the third straight year, where they finished just out of the top 10 in 13th-place.
The Red Raiders will tee-off the season at their first event on Sept. 17-19 at the Notre Dame Invitational and Central Regional Preview.
