LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech head men's tennis coach Tim Siegel announced today the hiring of Toby Hansson as assistant men's tennis coach. Hansson replaces Efe Ustundag who took an assistant coaching position at Rice University earlier this month. Hansson, a native of Bjärred, Sweden, comes to Tech after spending the last four years playing professional tennis. He was a standout tennis player for SMU from 1997-2000. "I am really excited to add Toby to our staff, said Siegel. "He is an accomplished player who understands what it takes to build a successful college tennis team. His background in playing and coaching will be a big asset to our program. He will also be a tremendous recruiter for us." While at SMU, Hansson was an All-American in singles and a two-time doubles All-American. Twice he helped his team advance to the NCAA Championships, while qualifying once for the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships. Hansson was ranked as high as No. 2 in the country in doubles and No. 13 in singles for the Mustangs. In 2000, he was named the WAC Player of the Year and was named first team all-conference for both singles and doubles. His team captured two WAC championships during his time at SMU. Hansson graduated from SMU in 2000 with a degree in international studies.
