Red Raiders Fall Short of Nationals

LUBBOCK, Texas - With a 304 third-round, the No.36 Red Raider men's golf team fell short of their second NCAA Nationals birth by seven-strokes. Tech was led by freshman Oscar Floren who finished tied for 27th overall, shooting ten-over-par, 226. No.22 Kentucky took home tournament honors at the 2004 Central Regionals in West Lafayette, Ind., finishing first with a nine-stroke lead over second-place finisher No.8 Oklahoma State.
Tech entered into the No.10 hole just three-strokes out of the top 10. Tech had to endure a two-hour delay, due to lightning, before finishing off its last eight holes. With every team above the Red Raiders with a final score already set, the Red Raiders were unable to overcome the deficit that stood between them and the top 10. The Red Raiders did however were able to overcome an tough first round to jump 10 spots from their ranking of 23rd to 13th, due mostly in part to the teams 296 second-round performance.
Floren (75-75-76) was Tech's leader all three-days of the Central Regionals, and finished as Tech's highest golfer overall, moving up seven spots from his day one ranking to tie for 27th overall. Senior Brad Jacobson (80-73-74), in his last competition in the Tech red and black, finished as Tech's second best golfer with a tied for 30th-place. Jacobson had a rough first-round 80, but recovered with a one-over and two-over first and second-round, respectively. Jacobson finished 11-over 227.
Sophomore William Haddrell (81-75-76) finished tied for 60th, 16-over 232. Haddrell had a solid third-round to help Tech jump three more spots in the overall team rankings in the final-round of play. Sophomore Andrew Dresser (82-73-78) and junior Chris Pace (81-81-81) rounded out the last of the Red Raider golfers carding a 66th- and 114th-place finish, respectively. Dresser made a strong come back in the second-round to make a strike at the top 50 individually, but his third-round 78 prevented Dresser from having another top finish. Pace had a back-to-back-to-back 81s performance at this years regionals and finished 27-over 243.
Four Big 12 teams will move onto the Nationals competition from the Central Region. No.8 Oklahoma State (893) finished in second, No.17 Oklahoma (896) finished third, No.47 Texas A&M (899) finished fourth and No.9 Texas (901) finished in a tie for fifth.
The Red Raiders wrap up their season with a 13th-place finish at the 2004 Central Regionals and a tie for fifth-place finish at the Big 12 championships. Overall Tech ended with 10 top 10 finishes, five of which were in the top five.
