DALLAS - Alesha Robertson (Texas Tech) was named Big 12 Women's Basketball Player of the Week and Morenike Atunrase (Texas A&M) was named Big 12 Rookie of the Week for games played from Dec. 6-12 the conference office announced Monday.
Robertson was honored for the third time in her career after receiving two rookie of the week awards last season. Morenike was recognized for the first time and marks Texas A&M's second consecutive rookie of the week after Patrice Reado shared the award with Jackie McFarland (Colorado) last week. Players are nominated by each school's sports information office and voted on by a panel of media who cover Big 12 women's basketball.
Sophomore forward Robertson averaged 22.7 points and 5.0 rebounds per game last week in Texas Tech's wins over Miami (Fla.), Oral Roberts and Mississippi. She set the school record for most three-point baskets made in a game when she hit nine en route to scoring a career-high 37 points against Miami. Her nine three-pointers are tied for the second-most in a single game in the Big 12 annals and her 37 points are the second-most scored this season by a Big 12 player. The Plainview, Texas, native then added 15 and 16 points against ORU and Ole Miss, respectively. Robertson shot 44.2 percent from the field, 57.7 percent from the three-point arc and 93.8 percent from the free throw line last week.
Atunrase, a freshman forward, recorded the Big 12's second double-double by a freshman this season with career-highs of 21 points and 13 rebounds in the Aggies' win over McNeese State, their lone game of the week. She also notched career highs with five steals and three blocks. The Shreveport, La., native connected on 7-of-15 from the field and went 7-of-8 from the charity stripe. She nearly posted a double-double in the first half with 10 points and nine rebounds. Atunrase ranks second among Big 12 freshman in scoring (10.3) and rebounds (6.0) and leads in steals (2.14).
