LUBBOCK, Texas - The No.19/20 Texas Tech men's golf team has achieved a feat under Head Coach Greg Sands that has not been done in the history of the program. That is to be ranked in the top 20 this deep into the season.
While Sands is proud of the team for performing so well this season, he knew from the beginning that the team could do some great things this year.
"We are talented enough to be higher than what we are now, but we have to continue to get better and work towards playing this good later on in the season," said Sands. "While I am very proud of the guys, the rankings will not mean anything unless we are playing this solid in June for NCAA competition."
In the golfstat.com poll the Red Raiders are 19th, while holding a 20th-place ranking in the golfweek.com poll. The Red Raiders have in previous years held a ranking higher than their previous mark of 19th after just one tournament, but this deep into the season its their highest ranking to date.
Senior Shaun Melville, along with sophomore Oscar Floren and junior Andrew Dresser lead the Red Raiders not only on the greens, but also in the national individual rankings. Melville stands in 27th, Floren in 33rd and Dresser wraps up the Red Raiders in the polls with a 60th-place individual standings.
The Red Raiders will return to action Oct.11-12 at The Club Glove Invitational in Malibu, Calif. To defend their newly gained top-20 ranking.
