LUBBOCK, Texas - The men's golf team kicked off its season in style with a fourth place finish at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate in Albuquerque, N.M. Tech finished with an 882, 18 over par on the 72-par UNM Championship course.
Tech faced five teams ranked in the top 25 by GolfStat. Tech finished behind Arizona State (8), University of New Mexico (22) and Brigham Young University. This tournament marks the first time that Tech has beaten No. 10 Arizona and No. 11 University of Las Vegas. Tech also defeated North Carolina State (14). These wins mark the first time Tech has beaten Arizona and UNLV.
The depth of the field and the inexperience of his top performers are factors that head coach Greg Sands is very proud of.
"I couldn't be more pleased with our performance. William Haddrell has only competed in three tournaments and Oscar Floren made his first collegiate experience," said Sands. "For us to play in a field of twenty teams including ranked teams and beat them is a tremendous way for us to get the season started. Hopefully with wins like this, we will place high in the rankings."
Tech was also the leader among the Big 12, finishing ahead of Texas A&M, Colorado and Baylor.
Tech's top finisher was sophomore Haddrell who finished in third place with a 214, his best career score as well as finish. Haddrell shot a career low 70 in round one and surpassed it in round two with a 67. True freshman Floren finished in 11th with a score of 217 and a career low round of 72.
Tech will make their next appearance in Waco, Texas, at the Baylor Intercollegiate.
