LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech sophomore golfer Andrew Dresser (Carrollton, Texas/Creekview) saw his championship hopes come to an end at the 101st Western Amateur after falling 3 and 1 in quarterfinal match play to University of Southern California senior golfer Chris Botsford Saturday at Point O'Woods Golf and Country Club in Benton Harbor, Mich.
Dresser drained back-to-back birdie putts on the first two playoff holes of stroke play Saturday morning to advance to the 16-player match play field.
The appearance for Dresser was his first at the Western Amateur, considered one of the country's top amateur events next to the U.S. Amateur. Past winners of the Western Amateur include Ben Crenshaw, Justin Leonard and Tiger Woods.
The event was the second in the last month for Dresser, who won the Scratch Players Championship at Stevinson (Calif.) Ranch Course on July 4.
As a freshman last season, Dresser led the Red Raiders to a 12th-place finish at the NCAA Central Regional and missed advancing to the NCAA Championships by one stroke. Dresser averaged a team-leading 73.4 stroke average.
