Yossef Sets New Conference Mark at Championships

LINCOLN, Neb. - The Texas Tech track and field team concluded competition at the Big 12 Indoor Championships at the Devaney Center on Saturday, with senior Gezachw Yossef leading the way for the Red Raiders, setting a new conference mark in the men's mile.
Yossef and freshman Dwayne Benoit both qualified for the finals of the men's mile on Friday. Yossef ran 4:05.25 in the finals on Saturday to win the event and set a new Big 12 Indoor Championships record in the event. Benoit took seventh in the finals with a time of 4:19.41.
Senior Reggie Hill took second in the men's 60 meters, running 6.66, while freshman Saidric Williams finished fifth in the same event in a time of 6.78. Hill came in eighth in the 200m finals, pulling his hamstring about halfway through the race.
Sophomore Michael Beasley came in second in the men's high jump, clearing 6-11.50.
In the men's mile relay, the team of Antonio Franklin, Jon Decker, Orin Darrington and John Ritter took fifth with a time of 3:14.13. The women's mile relay squad of Ngozi Iwu, Melonie Barrow, D'Andria Brigham and Rachelle Evans came in sixth, finishing in a time of 3:46.27.
Iwu finished third in the 600 yard finals, posting a time of 1:20.38, breaking her own school record in the event, a mark she set just three weeks ago at the Texas Tech Open.
Sophomore Shannon Spaulding also came in third in the 800 meters in a time of 2:08.89, her career best mark and the fourth fastest mark in Tech school history.
Freshman Evans came in eighth in the 400m finals, posting a time of 55.81, while senior Tami Zachary took fifth in the women's 60m finals in a time of 7.44.
In the overall standings, the men finished 10th with 43 points, while the women tied for 10th with 27 points.
Both the men and women will run at next week's NCAA Last Chance/USA Indoor meet in Ames, Iowa, on March 2-3.
