Paul Goldstein, ranked No. 150 in the nation and the No. 1 seed in the tournament, had many choices where to play this week in a pro tournament. He wanted to visit Lubbock, Texas to see where Bob Knight now coached.
"I am excited to be in Bob Knight country and to see where he now lives," said Goldstein who is 25-years old. "Anytime you get the opportunity to visit a college you know it will be fun."
According to the United States Tennis Association, Goldstein is known as one of the smartest and quickest players of the game. He attended college at Stanford University where he became the first player in college tennis history to play for four NCAA tournament champions.
In 1998, he turned pro and captured his first USTA Circuit Title in 2000 at Waikoloa, Hawaii. After four months of rehab after overcoming a groin injury, he decided to visit Lubbock to get back on the tour.
"I wanted to come to Texas Tech because I thought it would be good for the program to have support from pro players. It will help Coach (Tim) Siegel and recruiting for his program. This is a great way to get the players exposed for the pros."
The 5-10, 155 pound, tennis player will begin competition Wednesday, October 17, at 11:30 a.m. at the McLeod Tennis Center in Lubbock. Admission is free to the public.
"The weather is great in Lubbock besides these gusts of wind..." said the laid-back Goldstein, "I am just excited to be back playing in such a nice facility."
