Tech Opens Red Raider Classic With Win

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech Red Raider volleyball team opened the 22nd annual Red Raider Classic on Friday evening with a 3-0 win over the George Mason Patriots at United Spirit Arena.
George Mason jumped out to an early lead in game-one as the Patriots cruised to a 4-1 advantage. Tech senior outside hitter Colleen Smith proved why she is an All-America candidate by taking charge of the Red Raider offense scoring 5 kills and two defensive digs. Texas Tech left off where they started in game-two by rattling of six-straight points after jumping ahead of the Patriots 9-6 in a close game. Tech took the second game 15-6 and went into the lockerroom with a 2-0 lead in the match. Tech was led offensively by Colleen Smith who tallied nine kills at the intermission. Melissa McGehee was the defensive leader with nine digs.
After the intermission, it was more of the same for the Red Raiders as the squad tallied 14 kills on 30 attempts to take game three 15-6 and win the match.
On the night, Tech was led by Colleen Smith's 13 kills and 10 digs. With the win, the Red Raiders improve to 6-0 on the season and will play Texas A&M Corpus Christi at noon on Saturday and will complete the tournament with a 3:30 match-up with Texas-Arlington.
In the early game on Friday, the Texas-Arlington Mavericks cruised past Texas A&M Corpus Christi 15-3, 15-9, 15-10. The Mavericks were led by Amber Pack who had 12 kills and six digs on the afternoon.
