FORT WORTH, Texas--Texas Tech put a damper on Texas Christian's home opener as the Red Raiders won three straight games to take the match and move to 5-0 on the season.
Texas Christian (1-3) jumped on Texas Tech (5-0) early in game-one by jumping out to a 6-1 lead before the Red Raiders were able to get their offense on tap. The Frogs dominated Tech throughout much of the game until the Red Raiders mounted a comeback thanks to four kills by sophomore outside hitter Ann Romjue. The Texas Tech defense held TCU at 13 points while the Red Raiders reeled off six straight points to win the game 15-13.
The Red Raiders were able to carry over some of the momentum they gained in the last half of the first game as Tech used a strong offensive attack to jump out to a commanding 12-2 lead in game-two. Tech took the second game 15-3 and went to the lockerroom with a 2-0 lead in the match. Ann Romjue led the team with 12 kills at the intermission while Colleen Smith put down nine. Melissa McGehee was the defensive leader with nine digs while Romjue had seven.
Tech was able to wrap up the match with a 15-8 win in game-three. Ann Romjue was again the offensive leader as she racked up five kills in the final game. On the night, Romjue led Texas Tech with 17 kills and 12 digs while Colleen Smith tallied 10 kills and one dig.
"Ann Romjue and Colleen Smith really inspired us in the first two games and they did a great job of keeping things going," said Tech head coach Jeff Nelson. "In the third game we went with a ball control line-up and were able to get everyone in the match but Laura Grote. "I purposely kept Laura out because I wanted Skydra to set the match to see what she could do. I think that getting 12 players some significant playing time will be huge for us down the road."
The match was played in Daniel-Meyer Coliseum marking the first time TCU has opened their season in the predominantly basketball facility. With the win, Texas Tech gave the Frogs a 0-3 record in Daniel-Meyer. Texas Tech will open the 2000 home season with the Red Raider Classic this weekend at United Spirit Arena. Texas Tech will face-off against George Mason in the second game of the tournament on Friday evening at 7:30 p.m.
