LUBBOCK, Texas - Despite cold temperatures and delayed play, the Texas Tech men's golf team finished tied for ninth at the Colorado State University hosted Ram Intercollegiate Classic Tuesday afternoon.
Junior Kyle Willman led the team with a 2-over par score of 142, tying for 12th with six other golfers, after shooting rounds of 70 and 72 in the two-day event. The junior college transfer finished six strokes behind individual medalist David Hearn of Wyoming.
Fellow junior David Bolen posted rounds of 71 and 74 for a 5-over par score of 145, tying the Austin native for 28th. Sophomore Brooks Kelly had rounds of 75 and 74 to tie for 43rd, while Mark Hull posted scores of 71 and 81 to finish in a tie for 57th. Brad Jacobson also played the Fort Collins Country Club course for the Red Raiders, shooting consecutive rounds of 80.
The final team score of 587 left Tech less than 10 strokes out of the top five squads in the tournament. The University of Colorado won the team portion of the event with a two-day total of 563.
Tech stood in fourth place overall heading into Tuesday's second round after strong performances from Willman and Bolen in Monday's, weather-delayed first round. The Red Raiders were only eight shots out of the lead and two back from Texas-Arlington and Penn State, who were tied for second heading into the second round of play.
Coach Greg Sands and his squad resume fall tournament play October 2-3 at the Colbert Invitational in Manhattan, Kan.
