LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech head coach Mike Leach came away from the last day of practice with just Red Raider newcomers with a good feeling about the progress of his rookies.
"This morning was as good a freshman practice as I've been around," Leach said. "The afternoon practice wasn't as good as the morning, but it was still good."
The Red Raider newcomers practiced for about 90 minutes in the morning and nearly two hours in the afternoon session. Both workouts were in shoulder pads and helmets.
"We put in a lot of our offense and defense this morning, but we were trying not to blow out any brain circuits," Leach said. "We put in a third more of our offense in the afternoon and taxed them a little more mentally. Now when the varsity gets in the young guys will be to the point of repetition."
The Texas Tech upperclassmen reported Thursday and went through physicals. There is no practice Friday, with orientations, media day and autograph day on tap for the reporting roster of 105.
The first full squad practice is scheduled for Saturday at 4 p.m. Texas Tech practices are open to the public.
The Red Raiders open the season Aug. 26 by hosting New Mexico in the inaugural Hispanic College Fund Football Classic. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Jones SBC Stadium.
