Texas Tech Director of Athletics Gerald Myers announced today that Red Raider assistants Stacey Totman and Greg Sands will take over the head coaching duties of the women's and men's golf programs. Totman will serve as head coach of the women's team, while Sands takes over the men's program.
The two will replace Texas Tech Director of Golf Jeff Mitchell, who will resign in June to become the head men's golf coach at Stanford University.
"Stacey and Greg have the ability, experience and background necessary to build upon and continue Texas Tech's growing tradition in golf," Myers said. "We are pleased and proud to have these two lead our golf programs in the new millennium."
Totman, who primarily works with the women's program under Mitchell, has been with the program as an assistant for the past three seasons.
"I am very excited about continuing the tradition that Jeff has worked so hard to build here at Texas Tech," Totman said. "Texas Tech is a great place to be. We have an administration that cares about the coaches and student-athletes. This is an exciting time in Texas Tech athletics and I feel honored to be a part of this university and athletic department."
A former member of the Red Raider women's golf team, Totman was a two-time All-Southwest Conference choice for Texas Tech. She was twice named to the SWC All-Tournament team. While at Tech, the Siuox Falls, S.D., native won the 1993 Wichita State Lady Shocker Tournament the 1994 Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Tournament.
Prior to her Tech playing career, Totman lettered for two seasons at the University of Minnesota, where she was selected to the All-Big 10 Team and NCAA East All-Region Team. She also was an NCAA East Regional qualifier. Totman is married to former Texas Tech baseball player Jason Totman.
Recently completing his first season on the Red Raider staff, Sands' responsibilities under Mitchell revolve around the men's program.
"It is an honor to be named head men's golf coach at such a fine institution," Sands said. "The athletic staff and community have created a momentum that I hope will ignite the men's golf program. With this positive environment and a commitment from our student-athletes, I believe we can reach a level of national prominence."
A native of Jacksonville, Texas, Sands was a member of back-to-back Western Athletic Conference championship teams at TCU in 1997 and 1998. He also was named an Academic All-American and WAC scholar-athlete during these two seasons. Sand's playing resume includes the Texas Collegiate Championship and co-champion of the Crown Colony Intercollegiate in 1997.
"From a personal standpoint, I am excited about the future of the Red Raider golf programs," Mitchell said. "Stacey is a good recruiter and a great student of the game. The women's team is in good hands.
"Greg has had some great experience both at TCU and at Tech," Mitchell said. "He has great insight and is very energetic. I look forward to watching the programs progress."
