LUBBOCK, Texas - While first-year Texas Tech head football coach Mike Leach called Tuesday's spring workout in full gear just "average", he did single out several players for their play through five practices.
"I thought we had an average day, but the effort and intensity was good," Leach said following the 2?-hour workout at the grass practice fields south of Jones Stadium. "We need to pick up our execution level some. I thought we kind of went in spurts throughout the practice."
The Red Raiders started the day in individual fundamental drills and position groups before moving to offense against defense periods of pass skeleton and pass protection. The day ended with a team period in open field, red zone and goal line situations.
Leach singled out quarterbacks Kliff Kingsbury and B.J. Symons for their play during the early going. He also liked the work of receivers Dee Jackson and Derek Dorris. Red Raider defensive coaches liked the work of defensive end Devin Lemons, linebackers Lawrence Flugence and John Norman, as well as safety Mark Washington.
Texas Tech will work in full pads again Wednesday, take Thursday off and then practice in shorts on Friday. Leach said the Red Raiders are scheduled to scrimmage Saturday morning. All Texas Tech spring drills are open to the public.
The annual Red-Black Game is set for April 15 at Jones Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. and admission to the game is free.
