LUBBOCK, Texas - The transition to a new system and a new coaching staff was mild compared to the transition in the weather on the first day of spring football drills at Texas Tech Tuesday afternoon.
A mild mid-day turned to a blustery afternoon for the first practice of the Mike Leach era, a workout in shorts and helmets which lasted almost 2? hours on the grass practice fields adjacent to Jones Stadium.
"I think we had every weather condition outside of a tornado, and I was waiting for that," Leach said, "but the best thing about it was everybody just kept rolling and we got some things accomplished."
The West Texas winds began to pick up at the beginning of the workout and soon gave way to a hail storm and wind gusts from the North of up to 36 miles per hour. The wind chill factor at the end of Tuesday's practice registered 23 degrees.
"It was a good first day, especially when you consider what we had to deal with, but once we started our meetings we had the day in the books and needed to keep on," Leach said. "We had a little lull in the middle, but we bounced back and got better as practice went on."
The practice was divided into position group work and individual drills before finishing with pass skeleton drills and a team period that pitted the offense against the defense.
The Red Raiders have 14 more days of work this spring, including another day in shorts Wednesday. The annual Red-Black Game is set for April 15 at Jones Stadium at 7 p.m.
