LUBBOCK, Texas - Mother Nature reared her head for the first time this season, dumping rain on the Red Raiders during Tuesday afternoon's workouts on the artificial turf at Jones SBC Stadium. The team opted for the artificial surface to prevent damage to the grass practice fields.
In addition to a steady downpour, the Red Raiders also combated cooler temperatures, but didn't skip a beat, according to head coach Mike Leach.
"We adapted good well to the weather and had a good practice," Leach said. "The guys are full of enthusiasm. Our running game looked good and Kliff (Kingsbury) handled the ball well despite it being wet."
Texas Tech opened Tuesday's drills with a special teams session, working on facets of the punting and kicking games. The No. 1 offensive and defensive units put their respective game plans in motion against the scout teams. The squad worked out in full pads.
The Red Raiders travel to Lawrence, Kan., this weekend to face the Kansas Jayhawks Sat., Oct. 28. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Memorial Stadium.
Texas Tech leads the series 6-0, dating back to the 1965 season when the Red Raiders handed the Jayhawks a 26-7 loss in the inaugural game. In six meetings, the Red Raiders have averaged 26.2 points per game, while holding the Jayhawks to 10 points per game. In the last two games, Tech has out-scored KU 23.5 to 12.
