LUBBOCK, Texas - Over the years, only four Red Raider football teams have had to do what Texas Tech is doing this week - prepare for the nation's top-ranked opponent.
The Red Raiders host No. 1-ranked Nebraska on Sat., Oct. 14, at Jones SBC Stadium. The game will be televised on FOX Sports Net as the network's national game. Ron Thulin, James Lofton and Eric Clemons will call the action, beginning with a 6:07 p.m. (CT) kickoff.
According to Texas Tech head coach Mike Leach, the Red Raiders are focused and have put together two good practices this week.
"We had a good practice today, the same as last night," Leach said. "The guys are looking good at every position. We've been sharp, crisp and focused on this weekend."
The Red Raiders worked out on the grass practice fields east of the Athletic Training Center on the Texas Tech campus. The team donned full pads for the cool afternoon workout and concentrated on offensive and defensive schemes against the scout team.
Saturday's game is the fifth for a Red Raider football team against the nation's top-ranked team. Texas Tech faced No. 1 Texas in 1977, top-ranked USC in 1979, No. 1 Washington in 1982 and the Cornhuskers in 1994 when they were ranked first. The games against USC and Nebraska were played at Jones SBC Stadium.
Nebraska leads the all-time series with the Red Raiders 5-0. The inaugural game was played in 1976 in the Bluebonnet Bowl in Houston. NU won the initial meeting 27-24. The last time the two teams met, the Huskers handed the Red Raiders a 29-0 defeat in Lincoln.
