LUBBOCK, Texas -
The Texas Tech men's and women's track and field teams competed at the Rocky Mountain Cup at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado, this weekend. The men finished third overall behind Colorado State and Air Force. The women came in fourth behind Colorado State, BYU and Utah State. Both teams competed with smaller squads than those finishing ahead of them, due to travel, and were forced to deal with the challenge of competing at highest altitude they will face this indoor season.
Texas Tech had two of its male sprinters provisionally qualify for the NCAA Indoor National Championship. Rohan McDonald recorded a season-best time of 46.73 in the 400-meters to provisionally qualify for the NCAAs. Shameron Turner recorded his best career time ever in the 200-meters to provisionally qualify with a time of 20.98. The men's mile relay team of Rohan McDonald, Josephus Howard, Shameron Turner and Desmond Johnson fell just short of provisionally qualifying for the NCAAs with a time of 3:12.15. In the field events, Dan Warfield finished second, the highest finish in any field event this year, with a mark of 4.6 meters
On the women's side, Sherri Coleman set a school record in the 60-meters with and earned a second place finish with a mark of 7.45. Another strong effort was by the rapidly improving Ngozi Iwu. Iwu captured first-place in the 400 meters with a time of 55.36. The mark was the top time ever recorded by a Texas Tech women in the event. Other first place finishes were Kaneshia Polk in the Triple jump with a mark of 11.86 meters in the triple jump and the women's mile relay team of Coleman, Polk, Iwu and Nina Roberts with a time of 3:50.88.
"We had a real good day," Director of Track and Field Greg Sholars said. "It was good to see us get a couple of national qualifiers. Rohan McDonald did an excellent job. Ngozi Iwu had another personal best and school record in the 400. Kaneshia Polk did really well in the triple jump. That's her premier event, and she got off to a good start. The best thing is we had a lot of people step up and give us personal bests. That makes us really excited about the rest of the spring season."
Texas Tech returns home to compete in the Red Raider Invitational on January 29-30. A majority of field events will take place on the 29th while all other events will occur during the day of the 30th. The meet will take place at the Athletic Training Center on the Texas Tech campus. Admission is free.
