BALTIMORE, Md. - Texas Tech men's tennis player Borut Martincevic (Maribor, Slovenia) was forced to withdraw Tuesday from the National Clay Court Championships due to an appendicitis. Following his 11 a.m. match against Joel McGregor of Tulsa, he was taken to the emergency room at the Greater Baltimore Medical Center after complaining of severe cramps and stomach pains. After several hours of examination in the emergency room, doctors removed his appendix. Currently, he is resting in a hospital room and is scheduled to be released tomorrow according to Director of Texas Tech Tennis Tim Siegel.
Martincevic had recorded a 4-0 record without losing a set in the pre-qualifying and qualifying rounds of the Championships and was scheduled to play again today. He will be examined when he returns to Lubbock in order to set a time for his return to the court.
"This is one of the most disappointing situations I've had in my coaching career," Siegel said. "He had exceeded my expectations and was well on his way to the main draw of the championships. Borut has shown so much as a No. 1 player. He played tremendous tennis and was the talk of the tournament. I'm very disappointed for him."
