Texas Tech Volleyball Blanks Missouri 3-0

LUBBOCK, Texas - Using momentum off two wins and a stellar showing against No. 10 Texas, the Texas Tech Volleyball team put it all together as it defeated Missouri 15-7, 15-10, 15-5 Saturday at the Hearnes Center. The victory improves Texas Tech to 14-9 overall and 3-7 in the Big 12 while Missouri drops to 8-13 overall and 2-8 overall.
Texas Tech has won three of its last four matches.
Texas Tech outhit Missouri .216 (40-16-111) to .016 (36-34-127) and outblocked the Tigers 11.0-5.0. Tech stormed the floor in game one and never looked back, taking an easy 15-7 victory after outhitting Missouri .353-.043. The Red Raiders held Missouri below .050 hitting in each of the three games.
"We blocked well and played well tonight," Texas Tech head coach Jeff Nelson said. "Colleen, Lori, Janelle and Ann all hit well. Jenny really came through big for us with three blocks to start off game three. That really sparked us. We got out a big lead in the first game and just kept playing hard. The only time Missouri ever led us was early in game three. Games one and two were really slow but we picked up the pace in game three."
Freshman Ann Romjue led Texas Tech with 12 kills and 11 digs. Romjue hit .276 (12-4-29) on the evening. Three Red Raiders hit over .300 in senior Lori Garber (10-3-19) who hit .368, junior Colleen Smith (5-0-12) who hit .417 and junior Janelle Jones (6-2-11) who hit .364. Sophomore setter Skydra Orzen had a match-high 12 digs and 32 assists. Freshman Jenny Donohoo sparked Tech in game three with three blocks in a row.
"I would say we dominated them," Nelson said. "We knew we could win then we went out and did it. We played well but we can always get better."
Missouri was led by Nicole Panzau and Annette Luyten who finished with seven kills apiece.
Texas Tech head coach Jeff Nelson has never lost to Missouri in his five-year career at Texas Tech. He is 8-0 vs. the Tigers.
