CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Texas Tech defensive back KEVIN CURTIS has been selected as the Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week by the Charlotte Touchdown Club for the week ending October 16.
Curtis, a sophomore from Lubbock, Texas, led the Red Raiders to a victory over Colorado and was also named the Big 12 Conference's Defensive Player of the Week. He set a career record with 20 tackles, 11 of them solo and nine assisted.
Curtis had a key interception in the end zone to stop a Buffaloes drive and also recovered a fumble. Curtis' efforts were a big reason the Texas Tech defense held Colorado to 114.6 yards under its season average.
Finalists this week included: Yubrenal Isabelle, Virginia, Leo Barnes, Southern Miss, Raymon Brown, SMU, Wayne Rogers, Houston, Sekou Sanyika, California, Kimball Christianson, Utah, Chris Hovan, Boston College, Chris Ghidorzi, Wisconsin, Anthony Waida, Kentucky, Donald McCall, Eastern Michigan and Chris Nofoaiga, Idaho.
Joining Curtis as National Defensive Player of the Week's this year are Zeke Moreno of Southern California and Brian Urlacher of New Mexico.
The Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week award will be selected weekly by the Charlotte Touchdown Club up until the announcement of the 1999 Mike Fox Bronko Nagurski Trophy winner on December 6 at an award's gala in Charlotte, N.C. Florida State head coach Bobby Bowden will be this year's keynote speaker.
