Matt Dowdy has been a full-time member of the Texas Tech Athletics Communications office since 2010 as he handles the publicity efforts associated with the Red Raider football program. He was promoted to Assistant Athletics Director in August 2021 and oversees the communications coverage of each of Texas Tech's 17 intercollegiate sports.
Dowdy has been a familiar face in the athletics communications office for the past decade as he began his career as a student intern for four years before being hired as an assistant director not long after earning his degree from Texas Tech University in the spring of 2010. He was named an associate director prior to the 2015-16 academic year and began overseeing publicity for the Red Raider football program in 2016.
Over his career, Dowdy has handled the media responsibilities for many of Texas Tech’s athletics programs, including soccer, volleyball, softball, men’s tennis and baseball. He also served as a secondary contact for the Red Raider football program during the 2014-15 campaigns.
One of the highlights of Dowdy’s tenure came during the 2016 baseball season where he was the primary media contact as the Red Raiders ran away with the Big 12 regular-season title on their way to their second appearance at the College World Series in Omaha over a three-year span. Dowdy was a member of the communications staff that traveled to Tech’s first-ever College World Series appearance in 2014.
He also served as the communications contact for Tom Stone’s soccer program during the Red Raiders first-ever trip to the Sweet 16 in 2014 as well as multiple NCAA Regional appearances by the Texas Tech softball program. In addition to his sport responsibilities, Dowdy has served as the communications coordinator for several NCAA and high school events held on Texas Tech’s campus.
Dowdy was a member of the athletics communications office in 2014 when Texas Tech was recognized as part of the “Super 11” field of sports information departments by the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA). Tech was one of 11 communications offices across the country to earn the distinction that is designed to reward and honor schools for assisting football writers across the country in the pressbox and on a daily basis.
Dowdy, an Idalou native, comes from a family of Red Raiders as his brothers, parents and most of his extended family all attended Texas Tech University. Dowdy earned his degree in public relations with a minor in exercise sports science in the spring of 2010.
Dowdy is a member of CoSIDA and the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA). He and his wife Kelsey, also a Texas Tech graduate, were married in June 2017.
