Steve Merriman

Merrmian arrives in Lubbock after a decorated 20-plus year career that includes various roles with six different MLB organizations as well as multiple stops as the pitching coach at the University of Michigan and the University of Toledo. He arrives at Tech after spending the past three seasons in the Tampa Bay Rays organization as the pitching coach at High-A Bowling Green and Double-A Montgomery.
During the 2024 season, Merriman helped the Biscuits to an 80-57 record, both the first and second half title and a trip to the Southern League Championship Series.
The coach went to the Rays organization after returning to the University of Michigan where the former Central Michigan Standout served as the Wolverines Pitching coach for the 2021 and 2022 seasons.
It was his third stint in Ann Arbor as the coach also served as Michigan's pitching coach for the 2011 and 2012 seasons as well as the 2001 and 2002 campaigns. Â Throughout his time at UofM he worked notable MLB Draft selections including 20-year MLB vet Rich Hill and former 2021 Second Round pick Steve Hajjar.
After spending the 2019-2021 seasons with the Colorado Rockies organization where he served as the Rockies Pitching Coordinator and assisted with the Rockies pitching analytics, technology implementation and program development. While with the Rockies, Merriman worked closely with newly hired pitching coach Steve Foster.
Merriman landed with the Rockies after spending the 2018 season with the Chicago Cubs serving as the Assistant Pitching Coordinator for Chicago's Dominican Academy to Low-A clubs.
The coaches over two-decades of experience also includes stints as a scout (Michigan and Ohio region), an Extended Spring Training Coordinator (Arizona Diamondbacks) and a rehab pitching coordinator role with the New York Mets organization.
While with the Mets organization, Merriman was part of the first portable biomechanics lab that was used in spring training (2005-06 season), run by the ASMI Lab and Dr. James Andrews and Glenn Fleisig,
In addition to his extensive experience in pro ball, Merriman is well versed in the modern baseball technologies including Rapsodo, Driveline, TrackMan, and PitchGrader and has served as an advisory board member for OnBase U and Proplay AI.
Merriman also has worked with the Texas Baseball Ranch (Ron Wilforth Clinic) and the Dr. Tom House/Joe Newton Arm Care + Velocity Program.
The Michigan native attended Central Michigan University where he earned his degree in Education in 1991 while being a four-year standout on the Chippewas baseball squad.
During his time in Mount Pleasant, CMU won three MAC Championships and made three NCAA Regional appearances. Merriman was an honorable mention All-MAC selection after the 1990 season.
He began his coaching career as the pitching coach at Toledo (1996 season) and had a two-season run as the head coach at Macomb Community College (2000-01).
While at Macomb, Merriman saw 90 percent of his student-athletes earn an opportunity at a four-year institution and saw five players drafted in the MLB Draft. The Monarch made back-to-back regional finals appearances and finished above .500 in both seasons.
Merriman and his wife Sue, have three children Troy (wife Hannah), Tricia (husband Nate) and Traci (husband Levi). The couple has two grandsons and two granddaughters. His son Troy is currently the head baseball coach at Tiffin University.
