LUBBOCK – A pair of Red Raiders are now in Switzerland with Christian Anderson and Grant McCasland set to compete in the 2025 FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup. Anderson will star for Germany while McCasland is an assistant coach with Team USA. The U19 World Cup takes place from June 28-July 5 in Lausanne, Switzerland with the 16-team event beginning with group stage play on Saturday before shifting to the knockout stage with the Round of 16 on July 2. The quarterfinals take place on July 4, followed by the semifinals on July 5 and the title game on July 6.
Germany opens the tournament against Slovenia at 7:30 a.m. (CST) on Saturday followed by the USA taking on Australia at 10:15 a.m. (CST) in its opening game. A full schedule is below with links to watch the games. All games will be streamed for free on FIBA's YouTube channel and live stats available at the tournament home page. Germany is in Group B along with Canada, China and Slovenia. Team USA is in Group D with Australia, Cameroon and France.
Anderson is coming off a freshman season at Texas Tech where he earned All-Big 12 Freshman Team honors after averaging 10.6 points, 3.0 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game. He is listed as the second-best prospect in the tournament on the FIBA website. An Atlanta, Georgia native, Anderson holds dual citizenship with his father originally from Germany. He scored a career-high 22 points in a win over Arkansas in the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 and finished the season tied for the team-high with 71 made 3-pointers. In conference play, Anderson averaged 11.4 points and shot 42.2 percent from beyond the arc. Â
"Representing Germany and having an opportunity to win it in Switzerland is exciting," Anderson said. "Since I have a unique opportunity to play on both sides of the world, it's going to feel familiar from a competition standpoint as I have faced most elite players worldwide at that age."
Anderson led Germany to the FIBA U18 EuroBasket Championship last summer in Finland, averaging 20.3 points and 5.0 assists through seven games of the tournament. He earned FIBA U18 EuroBasket All-Tournament Team after going off for 31 points and five assists in a win over Serbia in the championship game after dropping 24 on Slovenia in the semifinals. Anderson also has international experience playing for Germany in the U16 EuroBasket Championship 2022 and the FIBA U18 European Championship 2023.
McCasland has led Texas Tech to a 51-20 record over his first two season in Lubbock and is in his second year serving as an assistant coach for Team USA. Last summer, McCasland helped Team USA to the 2024 FIBA U18 AmeriCup Championship in Argentina before he led Tech to the 2025 NCAA Tournament Elite Eight. Earlier this summer, McCasland signed a six-year extension which has him leading the Red Raiders through the 2030-31 season.
