CARLSBAD, Calif. — The No. 24 Texas Tech men's golf team surged into the fourth round of the NCAA Championships on Sunday by shooting a 2-under-par 286, matching No. 1 Auburn for the best team score in the third round of the 30 teams in action, at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa. The Red Raiders jumped 11 spots up the team leaderboard, the biggest jump of any team, to finish in a tie for eighth place after beginning the day in 19th to secure its first trip to the fourth round of stroke play as a team since 2022.
The end of Sunday's third round marked the first cuts of the 30-team tournament as it shrinks from 30 teams to 15. Texas Tech cleared a cut line set at 17-over by the 15th place team, a cut line the Red Raiders cleared by five shots by finishing 12-over-par (876) after 54 holes. On Monday, the 15 remaining teams will play the fourth and final round of stroke play. The Top 8 teams after Monday will advance to the quarterfinals of the Match Play portion of the tournament set to start on Tuesday.
The Red Raiders were led by its two seniors on Sunday, Charlie DeLong and Calum Scott. DeLong fired a 3-under-par 69 while Scott carded his second consecutive 1-under-par 71.
DeLong had a 10-shot improvement from the second round, using his performance to rocket up the individual leaderboard from a tie for 87th to a tie for 36th. DeLong's 3-under-par was one of the six best single-round performances of the third round, bested only by Texas A&M's Phichaksn Maichon who shot a 4-under-par 68 while tying with four others at 3-under-par. DeLong, who teed off on hole No. 10 on Sunday, had a stretch from No. 15 to No. 6 where he tallied seven birdies and three pars to drop as low as 4-under after starting 3-over-par after the first five holes.
Scott's round was more up-and-down than DeLong's, finishing the first nine holes 1-under-par with four birdies, three bogeys and two pars. He finished the next nine holes even-par as he birdied No. 2 and No. 7 while recording bogeys on No. 4 and No. 9 to close his third round.
