Red Raiders earn 23rd consecutive NCAA Regional bid
April 30, 2025 | Men's Golf
LUBBOCK, Texas — The No. 23 Texas Tech men's golf team was selected on Wednesday to participate in the 2025 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships, announced live on the Golf Channel. The Red Raiders were placed in the Urbana Regional as the 4-seed in a field of teams seeded one through 13.
"I like it, I think it fits us for several reasons," head coach Greg Sands said about the regional selection site. "Specifically, our seniors will feel comfortable there. Charlie [DeLong] is from around that area. Calum's [Scott] played similar grass over the years that he's a little more used to than maybe some of the other sites. I'm really excited about going up there. I don't think a lot of teams have seen that golf course, which helps; other than Illinois, everybody is going to be on the same playing field there."
The Urbana Regional, May 12-14, hosted by the University of Illinois, will be played at Atkins Golf Club, home to the Fighting Illini men's and women's golf teams. The course, formerly known as Stone Creek Golf Club, is an 18-hole public golf course located in Urbana, Ill, which is a suburb of Champaign, where Illinois' campus sits. The home team is the 3-seed in the event; Oklahoma State enters as the 1-seed while North Carolina is the 2-seed, ahead of the Red Raiders at No. 4.
The regional will be the 23rd consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament for Texas Tech under head coach Greg Sands, and the 26th overall for the men's golf program. The Red Raiders will be seeking their fifth-straight NCAA Championship appearance, and 17th as a program, which is slated for May 23-28 at the Omni La Costa Champions Course in Carlsbad, Calif.
The Red Raiders enter the regional round following a strong showing at the Big 12 Men's Golf Championship last time out, finishing in third place in the 16-team field behind conference champion No. 5 Oklahoma State and runner-up No. 4 Arizona State. Texas Tech's strong showing pushed them back into the most recent Top 25, checking in at No. 23 — via the April 29 Scoreboard powered by Clippd rankings.
Projected to return to the postseason from the 2024 team that advanced to nationals last season, who have been regulars in the 2025 lineups, are Charlie DeLong and Calum Scott, who are both ranked in this season's PGA Tour University rankings. But spearheading the Red Raiders' success this spring has been freshman Connor Graham, who leads the team with a 70.7 scoring average and leads the team with seven Top 20 finishes this season, including two Top 10 finishes, one of which earned him a Big 12 All-Tournament Team nod for his finish (T-7th) at his first career championship event.
The Urbana Regional is one of six 54-hole regional tournaments that will be conducted May 12-14. Thirteen teams and 10 individuals not on those teams will compete in three of the six regionals (Texas Tech is competing in a 13-team field), while the other three regionals will have 14 teams and five individuals not on those teams. The top five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each regional will advance to the finals.
Team and individual medalist titles will be decided May 23-28 at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, California. Texas is the host institution for the 2025 championships. For more information on the event, visit ncaa.com.
