
Two in Top 20 after round one of Big 12 Championship

HOCKLEY, Texas – Texas Tech's Klara Hurtova and Maja Ambroziak opened the first round of the Big 12 Women's Golf Championship on Tuesday, shooting a 72 and a 73, respectively, at The Clubs at Houston Oaks that placed each of them in the Top 20 after the first day of competition. Hurtova is tied for 10th (1-over-par 72) while Ambroziak is tied for 18th (2-over-par 73).
Hurtova sits just three shots back from the overall lead with a trio of golfers atop the leaderboard, each shooting 2-under-par 69 to lead the 70 individuals that make up the 14 Big 12 teams in action. The sophomore, who is the reigning Big 12 Golfer of the Month, opened the front nine 1-over par. Hurtova took advantage of a 530-yard Par 5 on hole No. 4 for a birdie but also recorded a pair of bogeys on two Par 3s on the front nine. She steadied on the back nine, shooting par on all nine holes to finish 1-over on the par 71 course.
Ambroziak, meanwhile, had a more up-and-down first round. The sophomore led the Red Raiders with four birdies on Tuesday, two on the front side and two on the back nine, but also carded four bogeys as well as one double bogey on hole No. 5, a 140-yard par 3.Â
Texas Tech is tied for 12th with Baylor on the team leaderboard, among the 14 in the field, carding a 17-over-par 301 in the first round. Arizona and Iowa State lead the pack at 1-over-par (285) heading into Wednesday's second round. The three-day event will conclude on Thursday with the third and final round.
The Red Raiders and Colorado will be the first two teams to tee off round two on Wednesday morning, starting with Loewe at 8 a.m. CDT off the first tee. Hurtova will be the last of the five Red Raiders in action to tee off, set for 8:40 a.m.
