LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech Athletics is pleased to announce that 19 student-athletes will earn their degrees this weekend during the university's commencement ceremonies held at United Supermarkets Arena.
Â
Each of the 19 student-athletes graduating this weekend will walk the stage wearing a special red stole that signifies the individual's status as a student-athlete. The red stoles are part of a new athletics tradition that debuted last spring and will continue to be presented to graduating student-athletes prior to each ceremony.
Â
"We always look forward to seeing our student-athletes earn their degrees," Tech Director of Athletics Kirby Hocutt said. "We're proud of their accomplishments in the classroom, and we hope each student-athlete enjoys this special weekend with family and friends."
Â
The Tech softball program and the Red Raider football team lead the way with five graduates each this weekend. Adrian Gregory's softball program will see several mainstays in the lineup the past few years walk the stage in Kierra Miles, Sarah Weber, Brittany Warnecke, Dominique Alcocer and Susan Welborn.
Â
The Red Raider football program is represented by Nic Shimonek, Ja'Deion High, Michael Mays and Derrick Willies, all of which are actively preparing for Tech's upcoming appearance in the Birmingham Bowl. The group will be joined by former wide receiver Devin Lauderdale as well.
Â
The remaining list of graduates includes two-time track and field national champion Trey Culver as well as teammate Darien Tennon. Fellow track and field members Adria Parker and Paetyn Revel will both earn their degrees this weekend as will women's basketball standouts Jada Terry and Ioanna McKenzie.
Â
Two-time All-American and Olympic medalist Janine Beckie closes the group of graduating student-athletes as she will also be joined by fellow soccer standout Rebekah O'Brien as well as four-year baseball letterwinner Anthony Lyons. Â
Â
Commencement exercises begin at 3 p.m. Friday with the College of Arts & Sciences, which will be the first of four ceremonies over the weekend. Each ceremony will be streamed online at www.ttu.edu/livestream.
