NORMAN, Oklahoma -- Texas Tech volleyball (13-10, 2-7) fell to Oklahoma (8-12, 2-6), 3-0, on Wednesday, Oct. 28, at McCasland Field House in Norman, to split the season series.
OU won in straight-sets: 27-25, 25-19 and 25-23.
Junior Lauren Douglass recorded the team-best in kills with 10. It was her 10th time this season to lead the team in kills and the ninth match this season to reach double-digit figures in the category. Freshmen Katy Keenan (8) and Sarah Redding (7) rounded out the top-three for the Red Raiders.
Kills wouldn't be the only statistic Douglass would lead in, as she racked up six blocks, two solo, on Wednesday night. Tech's 9.5 team blocks were the most since the last time the Red Raiders battled OU on Sept. 23, when they tallied 12.0.
Junior Marguerite Grubb and freshman Morgan Reed were the main distributors of the Tech attack, dishing out 17 and 12 assists, respectively. The duo combined to assist on 29 of Tech's 39 kills against Oklahoma.
The Red Raiders fell behind early in the first set, 6-2, but rebounded with a 5-0 run to take the lead, 7-6, and force Oklahoma's first timeout. Tech used another short run to bolster their lead, controlling the first frame to a 20-15 advantage. OU would climb back to only down two at 22-20 and would face set point at 24-23; however, they would rattle off back-to-back points to flip the script. The Red Raiders would battle into extras, but would fall, 27-25, in set one.
Redding registered four kills in the first frame, as she would be one of eight different Red Raiders with at least one kill after the first set. Foust led the way with seven digs, with Morgan (5) and Akiu (4) following closely behind. Grubb assisted on seven of Tech's 14 kills in the first set.
Tech and OU were tied at every digit through 4-4, until Oklahoma broke through with a 3-0 run to take a 7-4 lead in the second set. OU would take three of the next four to grab a 10-5 advantage, before building their lead to 16-9 halfway through the second set. The Red Raiders stayed within striking distance, but would drop the second set, 25-19.
At the half, Redding and Douglass shared the lead in kills with six each. Douglass was prominent on the net, racking up five blocks, two solo. The Red Raiders had 7.0 blocks at the break.
The third set went back-and-forth early on, keeping the scored tied at eight. After OU took a 10-8 lead, Tech answered back to tie it at 10 thanks to a kill by Ybanez and a block by Katy Keenan & Jenna Allen. The Red Raiders pushed through to take a 13-11 lead and would turn it into an 18-15 advantage. OU would answer after being down 21-18 with a 5-0 run to take a 23-21 lead, forcing Tech to use its final timeout. They would battle back to gain two more points, but were edged out of the final frame, 25-23.
It'll be a quick turnaround for the Red Raiders, as they host No. 2 Texas on Friday, Oct. 30, at 6 p.m. at the United Supermarkets Arena.
