FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Texas Tech raced out to an early one-set lead, but Northeastern responded with wins over the next three sets to top the Red Raiders, 3-1 (14-25, 25-14, 25-19, 25-18), Saturday evening in the finale of the Rams Volleyball Classic at Moby Arena.
Tech (2-7) seemed to do no wrong early in the match as the Red Raiders finished the opening set with a .370 hitting percentage, led by four kills each by Amanda Dowdy and Aubree Piper. Barbara Conceicao added three kills in the set, also, making it seem Tech had fixed its problems from earlier in the day.
The Red Raiders went in the opposite direction from there, however, as Northeastern (6-4) took a 12-9 second-set advantage and immediately went on a 13-5 run to close the set. The Huskies hit .333 over the set, while holding the Red Raiders to .094 percentage.
With momentum now behind them, the Huskies carried its play into the next two sets, limiting Tech's chances on the attack while also preventing the Red Raiders from building much of a rally through the middle portions of the sets.
Dowdy finished with her second double-double of the year with 12 kills and 10 digs, while Piper was in double-figures for the first time in her young collegiate career with 10 kills and eight blocks. Tory Vaughan was solid on the defensive end with a season-high nine digs.
Northeastern finished the tournament in third place overall as the Rams Volleyball Classic title will be determined from the winner of 15th-ranked Colorado State and Illinois State, who have the tournament finale later tonight.
The Red Raiders do not get much time off as Big 12 play begins Wednesday evening in the home opener against Missouri. First serve is set for 6:30 p.m. at the United Spirit Arena and all tickets are $1.
The volleyball program will host a Fan Fest prior to the match as fans are encouraged to arrive at 5 p.m. in order to meet the team and get autographs. Tech will provide complementary finger foods, drinks, and a cash bar, while fans in attendance will also be registered for door prizes that include autographed volleyballs and t-shirts.
