LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech got under-par scores from three of four carded players on Friday en route to moving up to second place of the NCAA South Central Regional at the Traditions Club in College Station, Texas.
Beginning the day 6-under and five strokes behind first-round leaders Texas A&M and TCU, the Red Raiders chipped away at the lead early, eventually passing the Horned Frogs on the way to a 4-under 284 card, which matched Rice for the lowest round of the day. The Aggies hold a one-stroke lead over Tech entering Saturday's final round.
Tech's Friday success can be attributed in part to its bottom part of its card as Chris Ward and Matt Smith both improved on their first-round scores. A day after posting a 1-over score, Smith rebounded by firing 2-under, while Ward followed an even-par day by going 1-under.
Finley Ewing IV and Nils Floren remained among the field's top 10 individuals as Ewing posted a 1-under 71, while Floren carded an even-par day. The duo are both at 4-under-par for the tournament and sit in a tie for eighth place. Tyler Weworski completed Tech's card with a 4-over 76 performance.
TCU posted a three-over 291 to drop to third overall on the leaderboard at 8-under, while Wichita State (-3) and Pepperdine (-2) are the only other two schools under par.
The Red Raiders will join Texas A&M and TCU in the final pairing set to begin at 8:40 a.m. Saturday morning. The top-five teams advance to the NCAA Championships, held June 1-6 at The Honors Course in Chattanooga, Tenn.
