COLUMBUS, Ohio - A familiar presence showed its face at the start of third-round play for the Red Raiders as winds prevailed during the afternoon session of the 2002 NCAA Championships in Columbus, Ohio.
Red Raiders head coach Greg Sands looked to the wind as a good sign as Tech set to tee off. The Red Raiders, however, struggled, as did many of the teams in field, and dropped from its 19th place tie after the second round.
"I thought we would play well in the wind," Sands said, referring to the West Texas climate. "We haven't figured how to play well in the wind. From that aspect, I'm disappointed. But this is a tough course and it showed today."
Tech moved as high as 14th before swinging a club after the morning session scores reflected the winds impact. The Red Raiders shot a team-high 298 for the week after posting rounds of 288 and 287 in the first two rounds.
Mark Hull was the closest Red Raider to par this afternoon, shooting a 2-over par 73. Hull made the turn 1-under, but bogeyed his first two holes on the back and logged a double-bogey on No. 17. David Bolen, Brooks Kelly and Kyle Willmann each turned in 75s, while Brad Jacobson shot a 78.
Thunderstorms entered the area for the third-straight day, but not before the Red Raiders finished their round. Play was suspended. Tech was in a tie for 23rd at the time of suspension.
The Red Raiders will continue tomorrow in the fourth and final round. Tee times will be determined later this evening.
