LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech Cross Country teams travel to Seattle this weekend for their second meet of the year, the Sundodger Invitational hosted by the University of Washington. The meet will take place Saturday, September 25. Tech's two-time individual track and field national champion Leigh Daniel and the Washington Huskies women's team, currently ranked No. 8 in the country, headline the four race meet which features a large field of top flight NCAA, NAIA and club competitors.
Among the Division I teams scheduled to compete are Washington, Utah, Texas A&M, Pacific, Washington State and Eastern Washington. Rounding out competition will be a number of Division II and NAIA teams, including Alaska-Anchorage, Alaska-Fairbanks, Southern Idaho, Simon Fraser, Seattle Pacific, Central Washington and Southern Idaho.
The featured events, the men's and women's invitational races, begin at 12:15 p.m. and 1 p.m. (CDT) respectively. The women will run a 5K race while the men's race will be an 8K.
"With the amount and quality of competition at this meet it should give us an idea of where we are," said Raider cross country coach David Smith. "We've got teams from four different regions competing and there are some good teams there. I think Leigh is probably a favorite to win the women's race and we're thinking our best men should be in the top five to 10."
In their first meet of the season, the Red Raider Invitational held September 11 in Lubbock, both the men and women won their respective meets. The women were led by Daniel. She won the race with a course record time of 18:36 while the Tech women claimed the first seven places at the meet. Boniface Ndungu led the men, finishing with a time of 26:34.
